HEXAGRAM 03

HEXAGRAM NAME: CHUN - INITIAL DIFFICULTY

CONTEXT OF THE HEXAGRAM

The context brings the main idea, an archetype on which the hexagram will be based.

The hexagram CHUN tells about the initial difficulty, the difficulty that a plant faces in its growth.  The bud of a plant is still fragile.

POSITION OF HEXAGRAM 03 IN THE I CHING'S GENERAL SEQUENCE OF HEXAGRAMS

In the sequence of hexagrams proposed by King Wen, this hexagram represents the first fruitful encounter between the Creative Energy and the Receptive Energy of the Correspondent.

IDEOGRAM

The ideogram used here represents a tiny blade of grass that has just sprouted. The horizontal line is the soil, above the horizontal line is the tiny leaf, and below, the root that penetrates the soil.

Here the idea of experiencing a situation for the first time is strengthened and adds the perception of the fragility of the context.

STRUCTURE OF THE HEXAGRAM

Trigram Kan

about trigram Zhen

This hexagram is formed by the trigram Zhen (The Inciting - Thunder) at the bottom and Kan (Abysmal - Water) at the top.

Zhen has an upward movement, toward Kan, which represents danger, that is, our movement goes toward the unknown, here represented by danger.

We conclude from the very movement of the trigrams that difficulties tend to pass, if we avoid acting wrongly, for they will naturally cross over and distance themselves by overcoming the period of turbulence.

JUDGEMENT | DECISION - ADVICE FOR THE COMMON MAN

The situation of INITIAL DIFFICULTY allows the development of the intention to help others (altruism), perseverance, adaptability and the materialization of virtuous attitudes.

AUTHOR COMMENTS

- In a situation of initial difficulty it is wise to seek help. Seek more information from people who have already past the situation or from texts on the subject.

- When we do not know how to act, sudden movements should be avoided.

- The initial difficulties of a process can only be overcome through perseverance and resilience.

- We all have difficulties at the beginning of any process, but we shouldn't use them as obstacles not to go forward.

IMAGE - ADVICE FOR A HIGHER PERSON

A higher man can recognize what the common man is missing, can organize the Chaos that the scenario full of obstacles has generated. The common man, if he is interested, must accept the advice of the Higher Man to facilitate the organization of the Chaos and obtain the results with as little resistance to the environment as possible.

CONTEXT AND OBSERVATIONS OF THE LINES

These lines speak of meeting together to overcome an obstacle and achieve a aim.

To study these lines we will use Alfred Huang's translations of the Duke of Chou and Confucius texts, because better convey the original meaning.

LINES - INDIVIDUAL ADVICE WITHIN THE SITUATION

Here are some examples of interpretation (two lines) so that the reader can see how we work.

NINE IN THE FIRST POSITION MEANS

There are obstacles to be overcome. Acting with hesitation are characteristics of the first position of the Initial Difficulty period.

Despite difficulties and indecision we must remain persevering and upright.

A good piece of advice is to designate helpers and respect their opinions, because we are not prepared. Asking for help and showing respect are signs of humility that usually generate empathy.

SIX IN THE SECOND POSITION MEANS

The difficulties accumulate. The second position describes the situation of two people, one more experienced and centered, but more "simple" or outside social standards, and the other in the process of growing, with all the doubts and questioning that this implies.

In this way, the more experienced person must wait for the appropriate moment to approach. He should not be in a hurry, nor make impositions, he should wait for the natural cycle of events. At the opportune moment there will be understanding and a return to normality.
