HEXAGRAM 04
NAME OF THE HEXAGRAM: MENG - IMMATURITY
CONTEXT OF THE HEXAGRAM
The context brings the main idea, an archetype on which the hexagram will be based.
This hexagram describes the situation of an instructor and an apprentice.
Here, unfortunately, the apprentice, besides not reaching maturity is ignorant, stubborn and arrogant.
On the other hand, the most desired characteristics for an instructor are: know and having appropriate attitudes when instructing, which includes being patient or even rude.
Despite the characteristics of the apprentice, this situation has the potential to be corrected if the instructor maintains decorum and the apprentice remains persevering and humble.
The Trial, the first, second, third and sixth lines are teachings to the instructor, while the fourth and fifth line is a message and a finding respectively to the immature.
The Image is a message of introspection for the superior man.
POSITION OF HEXAGRAM 04 IN THE I CHING'S GENERAL SEQUENCE OF HEXAGRAMS
Immaturity is when someone can't handle the situation of Initial Difficulty properly, that is, can't seek help with humility and perseverance in a situation where one has no experience.
IDEOGRAM
This ideogram is composed of several other independent ideograms.
At the top are two tridents representing grasses growing. Below these is an upside down "U" that delimits the space representing a small house that houses a little pig. This animal represents the immature person.
The meaning of this image leads us to the growth of the immature person. We must isolate him until he is ready to be inserted into society.
It is worth pointing out that there is potential for growth, because the wisdom of the novice simply has not yet surfaced. There is also the expectation that the instructor will blossom the apprentice's wisdom.
STRUCTURE OF THE HEXAGRAM
Trigram Ken
about the trigram Kan
A fountain (Kan - Abyssal) at the foot of the mountain (Ken - Mountain) is the symbol of immaturity, for it, in this position, represents wasted irrigation water.
JUDGEMENT | DECISION - ADVICE FOR THE COMMON MAN
"YOUTHFUL FOLLY has successful. (As a Superior Man), It is not I who seek the young fool; The young fool seeks me. At the first oracle I inform him. If he asks two or three times, it is importunity. If he importunes, I give him no information. Perseverance furthers." (Richard Wilhelm)
Being a rare exception to the rule, the Judgment text of this hexagram is an advice for the attitude that the instructor should have when faced with an immature, stubborn and superb person.
Right at the beginning of the Judgement, King Wen says that the situation is favorable, that is, after several attempts it will end well.
In the sequence there is an advice to the instructor to maintain posture face the immature and, in the conclusion of the paragraph, an advice to maintain perseverance. In this case the perseverance of the learner in trying to solve the problem and perseverance of the instructor in maintaining the correct attitude in front of the situation.
IMAGE - ADVICE FOR A HIGHER PERSON
"A sprin wells up at the foot of the mountain: The image of Youth. Thus the superior man fosters his character By thoroughness in that he does." (Richard Wilhelm)
The superior man realizes that a water source at the foot of the mountain is not an ideal situation, it fails to moisten the entire hillside. Identifying with the situation, he seeks to improve himself to be more effective in exerting good, usually passive, influence in the community around him.
CONTEXT and LINE OBSERVATION
The lines are advice for the instructor or the apprentice.
LINES - INDIVIDUAL ADVICE WITHIN THE SITUATION
Here are some examples of interpretation (two lines) so that the reader can see how we work.
SIX IN THE FIRST POSITION MEANS
A characteristic of human beings is the possibility to evolve their consciousness by increasing their insight, common sense, social understanding, political understanding, moral, ethical, and for some, spiritual awareness.
Development can happen at any age, we just need to be open to it. Generally, opportunities are presented to us through new situations (Hexagram 03 - Initial Difficulty) and we choose with our free will, considering our difficulties, to learn them or not. If we don't learn from the situation, we are "led" to Hexagram 04 - Immaturity.
In the first position the instructor must exercise rigorous discipline through clear rules, but it is very important to avoid punishments, especially prolonged ones, because these distance the ignorant person from opportunities for growth and tend to depress him or generate revolts.
Although Richard Wilhelm, in this position, uses the expression "emphasize the law", I prefer to adopt "exercise a discipline through clear rules". In my understanding, the enforcement of laws will be addressed for the whole community in the sixth position. Chergn uses "Discipline by the Law of Righteousness" which also seems lighter to me than emphasizing the laws, since it is based on the instructor's example of righteousness.
NINE IN THE SECOND POSITION MEANS
The major goal of the instructor is to teach the apprentice, so the instructor must, when appropriate, be benevolent to the immature, which includes giving opportunities for the immature to learn and play all roles, including command roles.
Teaching, learning, and interacting are the ways in which the firm and malleable are complementary.
There is another bias in this position that says that the instructor should also accept and be benevolent to people who, at this moment, are exerting a more Yin - Malleable energy.
